Property Owners on Hook for Lake Champlain Cleanup

Could it happen here? “January 17, 2016: MONTPERLIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont’s state treasurer says property owners could be on the hook for $25 million a year for a water cleanup initiative… The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has mandated Vermont reduce phosphorus runoff into Lake Champlain, which pollutes the water and causes toxic algae blooms. Farmers, business owners and municipalities must find ways to reduce runoff.”

While the chances of this happening on Watchic Lake are small, it should serve as a reminder that everyone on and around the lake has a role to play in keeping the lake healthy… and possibly a cost to bear if we do not.

Watchic Lake is fortunate to have good quality water and limited issues with algae blooms. This can only continue if property owners on and around the lake are diligent in avoiding nutrient rich runoff entering the lake.
