Completed – Watchic Lake 2020 DEP Section 319 Grant

We are pleased to announce that all work on our Watchic Lake Protection Project has been completed and approved by Maine DEP. Through these projects, an estimated 2.33 tons of sediment and 1.99 pounds of phosphorus will be prevented from washing into Watchic Lake each year. 112.5 feet of streambank or shoreline will be protected. WLA Volunteers Collect Abandoned Loon Eggs

Over the past summer, two loon eggs were left abandoned by parents. In order to support the long term health of loons in Maine, the WLA gathered these eggs and submitted them Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI) for testing. BRI tests abandoned loon eggs to measure mercury levels. Female loons flush mercury from their body into their eggs, and thus measuring the mercury in eggs gives an indication of the amount of mercury in the loons’ habitat. BRI has an extensive

Reminder – Dam Opening about November 1

The Watchic Lake dam gate will be opened on about Monday November 1, 2022 (plus or minus a few days depending on weather) for the winter. Following the opening, the lake level will go down to its winter level over the course of about two to four weeks (depending in part on rainfall).
