2021 Water Quality Report Available

Based on the findings contained in the 2021 Watchic Lake Water Quality Report, the water quality of Watchic Lake remains good, and is substantially unchanged from data collected over the previous 5 years (2016-2020), and from data back to the 1970’s. Specifically, water clarity and total phosphorus levels are consistent with previous years and consistent with other Maine lakes like ours. Email Scam – Watch Out

Recently some folks on Watchic Lake have received emails looking for donations, using the WLA and Paul McNulty in the signature field. These emails are a SCAM. They are NOT coming from the WLA. They are not coming from me, as you can see in the From address field. A second email we have seen appears to be Phishing. It will come from someone you might know, but when you reply, the email address changes to different yet similar address. DO

Yes It Sinks, But It’s Still Trash.

Amy Smith of Hi-Vu Road spent a few hours snorkeling along the western shore of the lake. During this time she collected a significant amount of trash from the bottom of the lake. As you can see in the photo, its pretty gross and pretty dangerous. Bottles get broken and make for terrible foot injuries. Step on a rusty can, and be prepared to spend some time in the ER. Ropes and flags get wrapped up in motors. Please carry

Hannaford Supermarket, Standish

Hannaford started out as a fresh produce vendor in Portland, Maine, way back in 1883 – so we know a thing or two about quality. We’re still connected to those early roots as a local market, and the connection we have to the sources of our fresh foods is core to the way we do business. Hannaford is a full-service grocery store. Along with a pharmacy, we offer fresh meats, fish, beer, wine, produce and more. We’re proud to play

August 4th Social Event – Great Response

Thank you to all that joined us at the Outpost Public House Restaurant on Wednesday August 4th. Over 60 people attended and the feedback was positive as folks had a chance to meet some of their Watchic Lake neighbors, learn about the lake, purchase some Watchic Lake items, and have some food and drink. Many attendees took their food and drink outdoors on the covered porch connected to the meeting room. An overview was provided on the status of the

Lake-Friendly Water Sport Zones

During the summer, WLA members raised concerns about wakesurfing on the lake, and the potential risk to lake users, wildlife (e.g. swamping loon nests), and shoreland property from the large waves (over 3 feet). Although the wakesurfing is generally happening at slow speeds near the center of the lake, waves created have disrupted kayakers and damaged docks. In response to these comments, the WLA contacted the Maine Lakes Society and found that wakesurfing is a growing concern on many Maine

Great Info on Maintaining Septic Systems

Understanding and maintaining your septic systems is important to the quality of Watchic Lake, and to your property’s value. The Maine Lakes organization has recently completed some great info on maintaining your septic system, and educating renters and household members how to extend the life and effectiveness of their system. See Lakeside Living and Caring for Your Septic System. Their key points are: Think at the Sink! Keep grease, fats, harmful chemicals, and hair out of the drain. They can

New Loon Nesting Raft at Paine Brook

As many Watchic Lake residents are aware there have not been any loon chicks at the Paine Brook (south) end of the lake since 2018. The WLA Environmental Committee and Lee Attix of Loon Conservation Associates believes this is because the traditional nesting site in the Paine Brook inlet was washed out a few years back.  Working with Lee Attix, the WLA was able to secure one of the prototypes for a new loon nesting raft design developed by volunteers
