Updates to Maine’s laws on lead fishing tackle

There are some updates to Maine’s laws on the use and sale of lead fishing tackle which can be found on the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website.

Currently, the use of lead sinkers and unpainted lead jigs less than 2.5 inches long or weighing less than 1 ounce is prohibited. Beginning September 1, 2026, the use of painted lead jigs less than 2.5 inches long or weighing less than 1 ounce will be prohibited.

Let’s try to keep our lake lead free for the health and safety of all! Did you know that lead poisoning from fishing tackle is one of the leading causes of death of adult loons in our region?
