Ice in the Early Days

Ever wonder how people chilled their milk, meats, veggies, and of course their beer during the warm summer months on the lake? Ice from an ice-house of course.  David F. Drew writes in his book An Almanac of the Paine Neighborhood and Watchic Pond From 1800 to 1935 “When my family came to camp in the spring and fall, our first chore was to get a piece of ice for the icebox. It would be covered with sawdust or hay

The Porches was not cheap –

Water Quality Status (Winter 2013 – 2014)

This winter the lake has been consistently covered with an ice sheet that has provided a good surface for many winter activities. Reports by those who have been fishing the lake this winter have indicated that the catch has been good to date. Pending a slow snow melt and ease into spring, conditions are such that lake water quality should remain consistent. In August 2013, the Watchic Lake Association (WLA) was notified by local authorities that a complaint regarding septic

Dam Safety Improved

The area around the dam has been used for years by folks not always understanding the risk of injury. The WLA board felt it was time to reduce the risk and improve the safety for all users of Watchic Lake. During the fall of 2013, dam safety has been improved by: Better signage: Provide signs that warn of the hazards, and place them so can be seen from the water at a safe distance (100 feet from shore). Also, new
