Volunteers Monitoring Water Quality 2019

The water quality committee has completed a mid-summer water quality report which you can read here: 2019 mid-summer report. Also more information can be found in the Water Quality section of this website. In summary, the water quality committee has been out on the lake about 10 times this season checking the water quality.  You may have noticed that the water clarity is lower than usual. Lets Keep Out Invasive Plants!

We are fortunate that Watchic Lake has not experienced invasive plants such as variable leaf milfoil or Eurasian watermilfoil. Lets keep it that way! Always remove all plants from your canoe, kayak, boat, trailer, oars/paddles, fishing gear and anchor when going in and out of a body of water. Dispose of any plants in the trash – not onto the ground. Let your watercraft dry. More details can be found in State of Maine Courtesy Boat Inspector Handbook.  Before bringing your watercraft

New ME Law Requires Septic System Inspections for Lakefront Properties Starting in 2020

Beginning on January 1, 2020, home buyers in Maine will be required to complete septic system inspections before the purchase of lakefront and riverfront homes and camps. The new law, LD 216 was signed on April 22, 2019 and extends existing laws that require home buyers of coastal shoreland properties to complete septic system inspections prior completing the purchase. Supporters, including the WLA, believe the law will help in detecting and repairing faulty septic systems that leak pollutants into adjacent

Is Your Raft Floating Around the Lake?

Property owners around the lake have noticed a raft that has been floating freely about the lake over the past few months. Its currently in the vicinity of Blueberry Island.  It’s a nice looking raft… photo included. If you are the owner, we suggest you pick it up. Or, if you know who might own the raft, please encourage them to pick it up. For everyone on the lake; rafts/docks/kayaks/etc. come lose. It’s a good idea to have your name

2019 Water Quality Monitoring Update

WLA volunteers, as part of the our water quality monitoring program, have reinstalled our red buoy system on the south end of the lake, about mid-way between Watchic Road 5 and East Eleanor Ave (the deepest part of the lake at ~40 feet or 12.5 m). Please use caution when boating near the buoy. Click/touch here to read more about the technology. In addition to gathering the buoy data, David and Eileen Burnell (certified by the Lake Stewards of Maine)

Dam closed April 16… Spring and summer is on the way!

The dam functioned flawlessly over the past winter. This year the dam was closed April 16, 2019 shortly after ice out. This will raise the lake to the summer full pond level over about next two to three weeks depending on the weather. As a reminder, to address seasonal changes the dam gate is opened to lower the water level on about October 15 (generally Columbus Day), and is closed again to raise the water level shortly after ice-out (between

2018 Water Quality Report Available

We have completed our 2018 water quality report for Watchic Lake and its tributaries. This report also includes a summary of water quality over the past three years. In summary, the report states that while water quality is good today, nutrients entering the lake continue to pose long term risks to water quality, and thus quality of life.  The message in the report is clear – as property owners and interested stakeholders, we must work to address increasing runoff into the

Loons on the Hunt

Thanks to Patty Taylor we have some wonderful pictures of some Watchic Lake Loons. The picture show here was taken this fall, and shows a young loon swallowing a good sized fish. Loons, who are visual hunters, require clear water to catch their prey and keep coming back to the lake.

2018 Plant Inventory Completed

In August of 2018, ten WLA board members and volunteers surveyed the lake for invasive plant species – none were found. This is the third year in a row that a thorough inventory of lake plants has been completed. As a member of the Lakes Steward of Maine (formerly VLMP) Invasive Plant Patrol program, we submit an inventory of the native and invasive plants found in the lake. 23 native plants were identified over the past two years. To learn
