Email Scam – Watch Out

Recently some folks on Watchic Lake have received emails looking for donations, using the WLA and Paul McNulty in the signature field. These emails are a SCAM. They are NOT coming from the WLA. They are not coming from me, as you can see in the From address field. A second email we have seen appears to be Phishing. It will come from someone you might know, but when you reply, the email address changes to different yet similar address. DO

Hannaford Supermarket, Standish

Hannaford started out as a fresh produce vendor in Portland, Maine, way back in 1883 – so we know a thing or two about quality. We’re still connected to those early roots as a local market, and the connection we have to the sources of our fresh foods is core to the way we do business. Hannaford is a full-service grocery store. Along with a pharmacy, we offer fresh meats, fish, beer, wine, produce and more. We’re proud to play

Living with Loons… Back after Ice-out

Watchic Lake is fortunate to have one or two loon families on the lake each year (specifically “Common Loons”). After spending the winter on the Maine coast, they have already arrived shortly after ice out, They generally nest on one of the islands or in the swamp. Each year they parade their chicks for us to enjoy. Maine Audubon provides a wonderful poster on how to live with loons. You can find it here: Living in Loon Territory. Check it

Spring 2020 Dam Closing

This year the dam was closed on March 26 (shortly after ice out). We close the dam to raise the lake to the summer full pond level. Full pond will be reached in about two to three weeks depending on the weather. Ice out occurred on about March 23 this year, a bit earlier than previous years (see all dates). As a reminder, to address seasonal changes, the dam gate is opened to lower the water level on about October

2019 Water Quality Report Available

During 2019, the water quality of Watchic Lake remains good and is substantially unchanged from data collected over the previous 3 years (2016-2018). While water quality is good today, Watchic Lake remains at risk over the long term. Nutrient laden run-off from storms (especially mega-storms) can enter the watershed and lake causing negative changes in the lake’s water quality. Please click or touch for the Full 2019 Water Quality Report or visit our complete water quality page.

Reminder Fall 2019 Dam Opening – Columbus Day

Its that time of year again… the dam gate will be opened on about Columbus Day, Monday October 14, 2019 for the winter. Following the opening, the lake level will go down to its winter level (about 18 inches below full pond) over the course of about two to four weeks (depending in part on rainfall). Lowering the lake level protects our shoreline from winter ice damage. Plan your boat and dock removal accordingly. Except in extreme weather situations, we

Lets Keep Out Invasive Plants!

We are fortunate that Watchic Lake has not experienced invasive plants such as variable leaf milfoil or Eurasian watermilfoil. Lets keep it that way! Always remove all plants from your canoe, kayak, boat, trailer, oars/paddles, fishing gear and anchor when going in and out of a body of water. Dispose of any plants in the trash – not onto the ground. Let your watercraft dry. More details can be found in State of Maine Courtesy Boat Inspector Handbook.  Before bringing your watercraft
